Attached or freestanding
An attached pergola runs off the wall of the house and is the usual choice for extending a living area straight out from the back door. A freestanding pergola sits on its own and suits a poolside, a BBQ zone or a spot further down the yard. We design either to match your home and will tell you which makes more sense for your layout when we measure up.
Timber or steel
Timber gives a warm, natural look and suits traditional and Hamptons-style homes. Steel, powder-coated or Colorbond, gives clean lines, longer spans and very low maintenance. Both are built to handle the local climate: hard UV and summer storms on the Gold Coast, cold and wind in Melbourne.
Can a pergola have a roof?
Yes, with options. You can leave it open, fit a permeable roof such as shade cloth or battens that lets light and a little rain through, or fully roof it in Colorbond, polycarbonate or insulated panels for year-round use. A fully roofed pergola is close to what the Gold Coast calls a patio, and we build both.

Whether a pergola needs a permit depends on where you are and the structure. In Victoria a small open pergola may be exempt under certain size and height limits, subject to your council and any overlay. On the Gold Coast, approval is generally required.
